Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal: Key Stats & Match Review

On Saturday, the defending champions Manchester City completely shattered the 10-man Arsenal as the Sky Blues won the home game by 5-0. The Gunners were devastated on the field as they were completely clueless on that afternoon. 

Man City took only 7 minutes to open the scoreline. Ilkay Gundogan scored the opener with a header from a Gabriel Jesus’ cross. 

Just five minutes later, Ferran Torres scored the second goal for the home team. While the visitors had the clueless response to a long-distant set-piece, the Spanish youngster comfortably netted the ball. 

In the 35th minute, Arsenal went down to 10-man after Granit Xhaka received a direct red card for a dangerous tackle against João Cancelo. Even VAR couldn’t save the Swiss midfielder on that occasion.

Just before the two minutes of the regulation time of the first half, Jesus made the scoreline 3-0, which was the perfect result of a brilliant team game. 

Man City continued the momentum in the second half, where they added two more goals to the scoreline. Rodri inscribed his name in the goal-scorers list of the match in the 53rd minute when his low shot from a 25-yard distance beat the helpless goalkeeper Bernd Leno. 

Torres scored second time for the day during the 84th minute of the game. Riyad Mahrez provided a good cross while the Spaniard managed to add a header that hit inside the post before entering into the goal.

The Sky Blues could easily add more goals as they managed 10 shots on target out of their 25 shots. Meanwhile, helpless Arsenal only had one shot on target and their final ball possession was just 19%.

• Arsenal hasn’t scored a goal yet in this PL season. Once again, it is their worst record in their PL season starting history. Before this game, the Gunners had previously missed out to score in all their first three matches of a top-flight season in 1953/54.
• Granit Xhaka has got his fourth red card in his PL career. After the latest sent-off, Xhaka becomes the most red-card holder in PL history as a Switzerland footballer. To achieve this unwanted record, he surpassed former Swiss defender Philippe Senderos, who got three red cards in his PL career.
• While it was Granit Xhaka’s fourth red card in his PL career, who started the PL career in the early 2016/17 season, it is the joint most red card in the PL since the beginning of the 2016/17 season.
